Mexican film mastermind Guillermo del Toro has taken the one of the most popular Japanese themes and made into a massive Hollywood blockbuster. How about that for multicultural? Guillermo del Toro’s latest movie is called Pacific Rim which was previously teased at Comicon; now the studio has released an official trailer for it in HD goodness. It tells us a lot about the film and sets the tone… Pacific Rim tells the stories of mankind versus the giant Kaiju creatures (think Godzilla monsters) which came from the sea. After exhausting our current military efforts, mankind decided to fight fire with fire and create giants of our own to defend ourselves.
The official Pacific Rim synopsis goes like so…
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes — a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) — who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
It looks like Pacific Rim will be full of memerable quotes such as Idris Elba’s “Today, we are canceling the apocalypse!” and the film’s own tag line “To fight monsters, we created monsters.” We also see quite a few familiar things which should make this movie a hit with Japanfans and more such as the mecha jet assisted punch, colorful paint job on the giant robots, and epic explosive battles between giants. As fans of both Guillermo del Toro, Godzilla movies, and giant mecha anime we are quite excited for this film!
