The Last Guardian Still In Development According to it's Creator

One of our most highly anticipated games is The Last Guardian (formerly code named Trico), which is being developed by Team ICO under SCE Japan Studio. Good news has come in the form of a public address by it’s creator, Fumito Ueda. On his website he posted a status update for The Last Guardian, the follow up to Shadow of the Colossus & ICO. This is what Fumito Ueda said…

“As some of you may have heard, I left Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Studio some time ago to pursue my creative passions. Nevertheless, I continue working on THE LAST GUARDIAN as a freelance contributor.

While it’s been a long time coming, THE LAST GUARDIAN remains under my creative supervision and is still in development by an incredibly talented team.

I should also mention that details regarding THE LAST GUARDIAN’s release is solely decided by Sony Computer Entertainment, not myself. Please keep an eye out for their official announcement.

Moving forward, it is my intent to continue my involvement with THE LAST GUARDIAN project, as well as pursue new creative projects with a fresh perspective. As I rekindle my passions as a creator, I look forward to seeing where it will take me, and I deeply appreciate your support during this transition.”

This message tell us:

  • The Last Guardian has NOT been cancelled
  • Sony will announce the release date for The Last Guardian at some point
  • Fumito Ueda is working in a creative capacity on the game

What does this message POSSIBLY hint at?

In a way, Ueda saying that Sony will announce the release date of the The Last Guardian could be his way of saying “stop asking.” Part of the reason why The Last Guardian has been under a lot of pressure is because it was announced 4 years ago and it’s release has since been delayed a few times. While this isn’t something new for Sony, as can be seen with releases of the Gran Turismo series, it’s something that Sony and many other companies have learned from. Don’t talk about games too early. On the other hand, it could mean that the game has shifted gears from being a Playstation 3 title and will now be a PS4 title. This is entirely speculative, but could also explain the extreme delays, comments about  technical hurdles, and the very secretive nature of the games status.

Games like Shadow of the Colossus & The Last Guardian sell systems. Sony will need a game like that to sell the upcoming Playstation 4. Sure, it’s expensive to make those games for such a long time, but it also makes a lot of money. I equate games like this to the U.S. space program. Expensive, inspiring, sometimes profitable. At the end of the day, the inspiration to buy a Sony console is what it’s all about; something Sony has learned the hard way with the Playstation Vita.
