You read that right, although it should come as no surprise since Maxis has reiterated several times that SimCity requires servers to support it’s specific gameplay features. This was in response to a tweeted question where a user asked about what will happen after the SimCity servers are taken offline after a few years.

Maxis also spoke with Polygon in an article regarding the technical issues of SimCity’s launch, in which Maxis general manager Lucy Bradshaw said, “With the way that the game works, we offload a significant amount of the calculations to our servers so that the computations are off the local PCs and are moved into the cloud. It wouldn’t be possible to make the game offline without a significant amount of engineering work by our team.”

Furthermore, Maxis tried to get EA out of the fire by taking responsibility for the disastrous launch of SimCity, claiming it was their own miscalculations, not EA’s. They said, “EA does not force design upon us.
