Steam Box: Piston price & Release date

Piston Steam Box x13

Xi3, the company that Valve backed for compact computer development has announced the price of Piston, it’s first unofficial Steam Box. It’s scheduled for a Holiday 2013 release date, with a price of $999.99. If you preorder Piston before March 18, 2013 you can get it for $900. Piston is a compact, Linux based gaming PC that is especially designed to work with Steam’s Big Picture mode.

The reason we’re calling it an unofficial Steam Box is because in previous statements, Gabe Newell says that Valve will be coming out with their own official Steam Box hardware.

Jason A. Sullivan, founder, president and CEO of Xi3 Corporation, says, “Given the amount of awards, media attention and gamer interest the PISTON Console has generated since it was unveiled at CES 2013 in January, we’ve become seriously concerned that we will not be able to meet the demand for PISTON Consoles this year. That’s why we have decided to begin accepting pre-orders on our PISTON Console, beginning today with the start of the SXSW Gaming Expo. Gaming Expo attendees will also get the benefit of being the first to see the PISTON Console in action.”

So, there you have it. If you’re going to SXSW in Austin, Texas you might be able to try out the Piston for yourself. It also looks like they’re specifically marketing it as a “console” as can be see in the press release.

X13 Piston Console Specs:

Primary Storage: 128GB SSD
Hard Drive Standard- Internal 128GB SSD
8GB RAM
3.2Ghz Quad Core (R464)

Hopefully we will find out exactly what graphics card this will have inside of it. Perhaps a GeForce GTX 680M? Or will they go AMD? What do you think?

  1. I’m pretty sure the 3.2Ghz Quad Core (R464) processor includes the graphic card. The processor is made by AMD and includes “HD 7660G” graphics. As far as integrated graphics goes, it’s better than Intel’s HD4000 but obviously not as good as other high end discrete graphic cards…
