COVER ART: Pokémon Gold Japanese version

Welcome to Cover Art! A section of the site where we look at a  video game’s box cover art and briefly discuss it’s gameplay and legacy.

Pokémon Gold  was released in Japan in 1999 and North America and Australia in 2000. Pokémon Gold was part of the second generation of the Pokémon series and added a 100 new Pokémon to collect as well as expanded the world of Pokémon to the fictional region of Johto  that was based on Japan’s Kansai and Tōkai regions.

Designed by by art director and original character designer Ken Sugimori, The cover features the legendary Pokémon Ho-Oh. Ken Sugimori drew all of the original 151 Pokémon himself,  as well as worked on the manga, anime and Pokémon trading cards.
