Super Mario Kart was both developed and published by Nintendo for the SNES. Directed by Super Mario World & Pilot Wings staff, it was released for the US in 1993.

Easily one of, if not the best racing game for the Super Nintendo, Super Mario Kart pits your favorite Mario characters against each other in crazy races. Super Mario Kart was notable for it’s blend of cartoon styling and early 3D graphics utilizing the SNES’ Mode 7 graphics effect. It also allowed players to use power ups which ranged from weapons to speed boosts inside various familiar and new race courses. Since then it’s continued through a series of sequels on various Nintendo consoles, except the Wii U (cheap shot, I know).

Gradius III is a shmup (shoot-em-up) developed by Konami, originally for arcades and later, for the SNES. It was a US Super Nintendo launch released in August of 1991.

Considered by many to be one of the hardest games of all time, Gradius III pits you in outer space combat against the Bacterion Empire. None of that matters as the brutal difficulty of Gradius III is what makes it stand out. It’s gameplay is notably unique from other shooters in the genre since Gradius uses a power up system which lets you decide which upgrades you’ll get progressively. Furthermore, Gradius III features one of the most memorable game soundtracks on the SNES. If you couldn’t tell, I really love Gradius III. The SNES version available for Nintendo’s Wii Virtual Console and the arcade version was released on the PS2 and PSP.

EarthBound, also known as Mother 2: Gyiyg Strikes Back in Japan, was developed by APE & Hal Laboratory for the Super Nintendo. It was released in the US in 1995 as a standalone title.

Although it didn’t sell that well, EarthBound is considered a classic RPG by many (including our writer Amir). It’s noted for it’s classic rock style music and comedic references to pop culture. In Japan, EarthBound is part of a series of games called “Mother” most of which have never seen US soil.
