As reported previously, Skullgirls developers crowd-funded their game (via IndieGoGo) to continue working on it after losing their publisher and changing their company name due to financial reasons. Things went REALLY well for them exceeding all their stretch goals (over $800k). Skullgirls will now get 5 new characters, new music, stages, and more all for free. The new characters are being decided based on popular vote. Many fans celebrated awaiting the updated and enhanced version of Skullgirls.

Great news right? But some backers who’s votes did not win decided to chargeback their donations to Lab Zero Games (Skullgirls current dev). Apparently, there was such a large amount of donations being reversed and/or threatened to be reversed via PayPal that PayPal actually froze Lab Zero’s bank account which caused the company not to be able to pay it’s employees. Thanks to those backers with sour grapes, the whole company went unpaid that weekend. Fortunately, Lab Zero president Peter Batholow was able to get the company’s bank account released and was able to pay the employees a few days later. Unforunately, PayPal is still holding $35,000 of Lab Zero’s crowd-funded money as “collateral”.

It’s likely a vocal minority, but it’s still something we’d like to address, if possible,” explains Bartholow. “We did this because we thought it would make people happy and excited, and we would rather it stay that way.”

Incredible.

If you like 2D fighters, chances are you’re familiar with Arc System Works and it’s lineage of fighters like Guilty Gear X and BlazblueBlazblue Director Toshimichi Mori explained to Japanese magazine Dengeki that he’s looking forward to the PS4 although has his reservations about development cost. He is also interested in the use of the Playstation 4‘s Share button although wonders if less “connected” countries will lose some of it’s value. He also elaborates that with the PS3, his team was limited to only being able to show 2 characters on screen due to it’s RAM limitations. He says the PS4 will have enough resources to display 4 characters. This could hint at the next Arc System Works game being a possible 4 player fighter or even a tag team fighting game. Furthermore, Mori confirms that Arc System Works is working on a new PS4 game but that he cannot confirm the title of it. He also added that, “We’re a fighting game maker – so we’re thinking of doing a fighting game. I want to make a new title to follow Guilty Gear and BlazBlue – a third title. Guilty Gear was made for Dreamcast originally, BlazBlue was meant for PS3 soon after it launched – so now that PS4 is coming out we’d like to make a completely new title for it.”

Toshimichi Mori also expressed his satisfaction with development for the Playstation Vita, which both BlazBlue and Guilty Gear are on. This could potentially lead to further releases from Arc System Works on Sony’s portable system.

Fighting games such as Tekken have been popular since the mid-90s, and obviously preforming the insane moves from games is great fun for fans. I mean what teenager doesn’t want to do the wicked Phoenix Smasher? What 12 year-old doesn’t karate chop their mother’s plant? Its a great fighting lesson and that plant deserved it. However, a few also do it professionally.

Uriah Hall is a Jamaican MMA fighter who is a UFC finalist. He explains that in his early fighting days he was inspired by Tekken and practiced a lot of the moves on his own. His trainer explains that those were basically the only moves that he knew.

UFC MMA fighter finalist Uriah Hall Tekken moves

“I would play that video game [Tekken] so much, and you know, I would go into practice mode and I would have the character, the computer, just spare with me back and forth almost like regular training. And you know, I would just keep playing until I see something that I do or I like and just pick up on it. And for me, I don’t know, visually it was almost like my body adjusted to it. So when I started to spar, moves that I would see, it would just come back like that. It’s something I couldn’t explain. Everytime I would see a cool move in Tekken man, I would just practice it till I got good at it. And when I do it in training, they’d be like what the hell was that.”

Anderson Silva needs no introduction since he’s the current and longest reigning middleweight champion. He’s used Boxing, Muay Thai, and even Capoeira to win his fights. One of his inspirations was of course Tekken.

“My children are who play the game most of the UFC. I play Tekken and I’ve taken too many techniques there, who worked and work today”

These are two badass dudes who have inspiration from fighting games.  Do you guys know any real life fighters who learned from the virtual ones?
