One of my favorite games of all time, Strider, might be due up for a remake from what we can tell. Leaked artwork has popped up on Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade website in addition to an achievement found in Steam’s databases. While these clues are short of a real announcement, Capcom will supposedly be revealing 2 new games at PAX East this weekend in Boston.

Here is the leaked Strider artwork…

If you’ve never played the original Capcom arcade game from 1989, Strider, check out this gameplay video…

Rumors suggest that Ninja Theory, developer of the Devil May Cry reboot (DmC) will be developing the Strider reboot. Furthermore, Ninja Theory has tweeted that they will be at GDC 2013. The fact that Strider was found on the Xbox Live Arcade site also hints towards it being either a 2.5D remake or reboot of some sort, not a AAA remake.

On a personal level, I hope that Koichi Yotsui has some involvement, because every action game he’s made since Strider has played like Strider (but with improved controls). This includes the obscure arcade game Osman and the more recently released Moon Diver.

Originally released for arcades in 1989, Strider, also known as Strider Hiryu in Japan, become one of Capcom’s early hits. A year later it was ported to the Sega Genesis and became a hit there too. Although multiple systems received a port of Strider, the Sega Genesis port became the most beloved. It was a pretty damn good port too only entirely outdone years later when an arcade perfect port was made for the Sony Playstation. This is the Japanese cover art featuring a “manga” style painting of the young ninja hero Hiryu with his enemy The Grand Master and his robotic minions in the background.

Strider does a lot of things right starting with simple, timeless gameplay. Hack n slash action coupled with smooth, acrobatic movement and controls were a winning combination. Hiryu can also slide under dangerous obstacles as well as grapple onto walls and climb them. Strider was also packed with strong visuals for the time that still look distinct and artistic to this day. To top things off is the fantastic soundtrack which utilized the Yamaha sound chip on the Sega Genesis to its full potential.

Halloween costumes. Cosplay. Whats the difference?
Here is our Top 5 Halloween costumes for gamers!

5

8 Bit Link (Legend of Zelda)

Link from the Zelda series is a go to costume for many gamers. Some of these costumes are cheap and pathetic. Others are gloriously detailed. But at the end of the day, its still another Link costume. We thought this 8 bit Link cosplay gave it a cute twist. Its both awesome and ridiculous to see giant sized 8 bit sprites walking around in real life.

Strider Hiryu (Strider series/Marvel vs Capcom series)

Although he’s gained popularity in the last few years, you don’t see many Strider Hiryu cosplays. This is something we think needs to change. Strider is a bad ass future ninja… who doesn’t want to be a future ninja?

3

Doom Guy (Doom series)

Ok, I’ve never seen a Doom cosplay, so this gets major points for originality. Id Software’s classic FPS is famous throughout the world, yet I could only find about 3 cosplays for it. Weird.

2

Samus Aran (Metroid Series)

For sheer complexity and cool factor, Samus makes our #2 slot. A proper Metroid cosplay is hard to find. Too many of the home made cosplays look sculpted, but every now and then you find one that looks shiny and perfect. Awesome.

Colossus 3 (Shadow of the Colossus)

Some cosplayers are ambition. Then there are some that are really ambitious. We’re always happy to see Wander from Shadow of the Colossus running around, but rarely do we get the joy of seeing one of the Colossus. If you’re going to cosplay something like this, it pays to go big… or colossus.
