Movies For Gamers: Akira (1988)

This is a new section of BabysoftMurderhands.com where we post and discuss a trailer for a classic cult movie. The movies we select will hopefully be movies that gamers will love too. And of course, if you haven’t seen it, we’ll give you a link to get it.

Our first animated entry in Movies For Gamers is the Japanese made Akira. My personal favorite anime ever made. Based on the manga of the same name, Akira is a cyberpunk drama based in a post WW3 dystopian futuristic Tokyo. The government is conducting secret experiments, trying to harness the human mind as a weapon. These experiments go horribly wrong and awaken a locked away energy that could destroy everything. Akira tells the story of how it effects 2 childhood friends and leads to a brutal battle of epic proportions. This movie packs a punch that gamers will enjoy including awesome motorcycle battle sequences, trippy yet gory psychic outbursts and even a massive “boss battle” type scene at the end.

There are 3 known Akira games released. A side scrolling action game on the Amiga, an NES text adventure game, and a pinball game for PS2. There was also going to be a THQ developed Akira game for SNES & Genesis (which looked promising) but it was sadly cancelled. On a side note, the character K9999 from the King of Fighters series was inspired by Tetsuo from Akira.
