Super Mario Crossover 3

In yet another shining example of why fan communities are awesome, The Exploding Rabbit has announced their next project: Super Mario Crossover 3.0. It crosses the paths of various NES classics like Super Mario BrosMetroid, Legend of Zelda, Blaster Master and Castlevania in one giant Super Mario style game. This goes beyond just being a simple hack, rather it’s a full game epic with brand new power ups and gameplay.

Check out the preview trailer for Super Mario Crossover 3

Super Mario Crossover 3 will feature characters from various NES games and it’s levels are being modeled after Super Mario Bros. Special as explained by Jay Pavlina, owner of Exploding Rabbit

Finally, we’re going to have more levels. We decided to take the levels from an obscure Mario game called Super Mario Bros. Special. It is a pretty weird game that even has some new items and enemies. Playing the game is an absolute nightmare because it’s on an old Japanese computer and it has many technical limitations. Now that it’s playable in SMBC, it can finally be enjoyed like other Mario games.”

You can play the previous version SMC on the Exploding Rabbit website. It’s quite fun and impressive how each game’s various elements were incorporated. Super Mario Crossover 3 looks to be even more ambitious.

The quotes indicated sarcasm for those that didn’t understand. Nintendo of America just announced the first 8 titles to be published on the Wii U’s Virtual Console. This game list and service come as a long delayed and needed feature for Nintendo’s fledgling mid-generation console.

Here is the Wii U Virtual Console launch line-up

Balloon Fight
Donkey Kong Jr
Excitebike
Ice Climber
Kirby’s Adventure
Punch-Out!!
F-Zero
Super Mario World

Nintendo also released this “sizzle reel” for the Wii U’s virtual console launch…

Despite being eagerly awaited, Nintendo’s core fans (the forgotten) are disappointed with the limited selection of games to say the least. The issue is not that the games announced for the Wii U VC are bad, but simply that there aren’t enough. Especially if you consider that the Wii U has a struggling game library, the Virtual Console is a cheap and easy way for Nintendo to keep gamers at bay. Especially if you consider that Nintendo’s entire NES and SNES library are freely available online for free via emulation with enhanced graphics, save states, and playable on mobile devices. Basically, Nintendo’s fans are complaining that they’ve not been given enough stuff to buy. It is unknown how Nintendo will react to it’s loyal, yet disappointed fan base.

So yeah, 8 games.

Movies For Gamers is a section of BabysoftMurderhands.com where we post and discuss a trailer for a classic cult movie. The movies we select will hopefully be movies that gamers will love too. And of course, if you haven’t seen it, we’ll give you a link to get it.

Golgo 13 The Professional poster

What do you get when you target a bad ass, aviator wearing, smoking, rifle toting assassin? You get Golgo 13: The Professional. A film which is manages a fine balance between being utterly bad ass and brutal at the same time. The fact that it’s an anime in some ways helps it, because a live action film like this could easily suck, but it suits the animation very well. With a keen focus on sniping, you watch the story of Golgo 13 (aka Duke Togo) unfold the mystery of who set him up and then exact revenge. The plot is full of betrayal and quick, brutal consequences for everyone who crosses Golgo 13.

Golgo 13 is heralded by old school anime fan boys like myself. It’s also been adapted into several video games over the years. First was on the SG-1000 (an Atari era Sega console) which had you sniping from a car. Then 2 adventure games on the NES which feature multiple styles of gameplay, Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode and The Mafat Conspiracy. These games are actually pretty good. There was also a series of arcade games which feature a sniper rifle controller and runs you through scenarios to pull off the highly skilled kills that Golgo 13 pulls off. An animated comic book was also released on the Playstation called Golgo 13: Kenenai Guntai and a quiz game called Golgo 13: File G-13 o Oe for the DS was released.

Welcome to Cover Art! A section of the site where we look at a retro video game’s box cover art and briefly discuss it’s gameplay and legacy.

What better time to showcase the cover art of the NES classic DuckTales. Hilariously, in Japan it’s called “Naughty Ducks Dream Adventures.” DuckTales was developed by Capcom and released in 1989 for the NES followed by a 1990 release on Gameboy.

DuckTales on NES is considered one of the best Disney games ever and is highly sought after. The Gameboy port of it also is held in high regard although is less popular. Capcom announced at PAX East 2013 that it is remaking the game for current gen consoles, calling it DuckTales Remastered.
