In an article today, Japanese website CinemaToday.jp has stated that Paul W.S. Anderson, director of the Resident Evil series of films, is planning production of a movie based on the game series Monster Hunter. Interestingly, both the Resident Evil and Monster Hunter franchises are owned by Capcom.
The Resident Evil movies are often enjoyed by critics for their action, but panned by fans of the game series for their non canon story lines. Paul W.S. Anderson has made various video game movies, including the mediocre Dead Or Alive film and the original Mortal Kombat film. Which goes to say that the movies he makes are often either really crappy “C” movies or really good “B” movies. The Monster Hunter games revolve around hunting “monsters”, collecting supplies and doing jobs for the local town that you’re in. The games themselves don’t really have much of a story to speak of so it will be interesting to see what Hollywood comes up with for the Monster Hunter movie.
No release date has been set yet for Monster Hunter’s silver screen debut, although you can catch the 5th Resident Evil movie, Resident Evil: Retribution starring Milla Jovovich, September 13, 2012 in US theaters.
