The Boondock Saints 1999 poster

A box office flop that almost didn’t even get released, The Boondock Saints is a crime film with a huge cult following revolving around 2 Irish fraternal twins who work as meat packers, Connor McManus (Sean Patrick Flanery) and Murphy McManus (Norman Reedus). The Russian mafia come to their local pub to “evict” the owner but end up getting owned by a bunch of drunken patrons, 2 of which include the brothers. This puts them on a hitlist in which they’re forced to kill the hit men sent after them. Consequently, it inspires the life changing decision to for them to become vigilantes dedicated to ridding their city, Boston, Ma, of crime. In the rush of things, eccentric, cross dressing FBI Special Agent Paul Smecker (Willem Dafoe) picks up their scent and insanity ensues. The Boondock Saints is noted for it’s cinematic shoot outs, quirky comedy, and distinct characters.

No video games have been produced for The Boondock Saints although gamers should be able to enjoy it’s blend of action and quirky comedy. In 2012, a The Boondock Saints video game was announced, but there hasn’t been any further reports about it.

Army of Darkness movie poster

Following up Sam Raimi’s horror classic Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness takes the things we loved about the previous films and converts it into an action film. Blending dark fantasy and comedy, Army of Darkness continues the adventures of Ash (played by The Chin aka Bruce Campbell). He travels through time to find himself stuck in the dark ages and to get back to his own time, he’s gotta find the book of the dead. Sh*t hits the fan and causes an all out war with the undead. Memorable lines such as “This is my boomstick!” have immortalized Army of Darkness to film fans everywhere.

Although the Evil Dead franchise has received several video games over the years, Army of Darkness has only received one direct video game. Army of Darkness Defense, an arcade style defense game on iOS and Android.

Soylent Green movie poster

It’s the year 2022…” Starring Charlton HestonSoylent Green is set in a dystopian future where pollution, world hunger, and the greenhouse effect have hit an all time high. Cheeseburgers and fries are a thing of the past, people now survive on mass produced, highly processed rations called “soylent green”. But there’s a dirty secret about soylent green which ends dramatically in a perfect “what a twist!” moment. Overall, Soylent Green is a 70′s detective story colored in science fiction.

Soylent Green never had any video games, but should appeal to gamers for it’s dystopian future and blend of science fiction.

Golgo 13 The Professional poster

What do you get when you target a bad ass, aviator wearing, smoking, rifle toting assassin? You get Golgo 13: The Professional. A film which is manages a fine balance between being utterly bad ass and brutal at the same time. The fact that it’s an anime in some ways helps it, because a live action film like this could easily suck, but it suits the animation very well. With a keen focus on sniping, you watch the story of Golgo 13 (aka Duke Togo) unfold the mystery of who set him up and then exact revenge. The plot is full of betrayal and quick, brutal consequences for everyone who crosses Golgo 13.

Golgo 13 is heralded by old school anime fan boys like myself. It’s also been adapted into several video games over the years. First was on the SG-1000 (an Atari era Sega console) which had you sniping from a car. Then 2 adventure games on the NES which feature multiple styles of gameplay, Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode and The Mafat Conspiracy. These games are actually pretty good. There was also a series of arcade games which feature a sniper rifle controller and runs you through scenarios to pull off the highly skilled kills that Golgo 13 pulls off. An animated comic book was also released on the Playstation called Golgo 13: Kenenai Guntai and a quiz game called Golgo 13: File G-13 o Oe for the DS was released.
