In this morning’s Nintendo Direct conference Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime announced what is surely to be one of the 3DS most successful games to date. Almost 22 years after it’s original release, Nintendo has finally made a sequel to the smash SNES hit The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2, as it’s is being called for now, is to be set in the same “universe” as the original ALttP game, but is to feature a completely new story and dungeons. Also retained from the original game is the 3/4 top-down camera perspective that many Zelda fans grew up on. During the brief gameplay video presented, it was obvious to see how the art style and gameplay of the original game carried over, but that this new game would have a focus on top-down depth using the 3DS’s unique stereoscopic 3D to the benefit of the game. Examples of this were shown when Link was traversing up and down different leveled layers of a dungeon by using springs on the ground to shoot up to the next floor. Lastly, a new gameplay aspect, at least to the Zelda universe was shown, with Link transforming into an animated 2-d version of himself, which switched the game to a side scrolling 2D as link traversed as a drawing along the walls of dungeons. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2 is set for a release date sometime in Holiday 2013 exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS, and a free and true 3D video of the game is available for download as of now from the 3DS eShop.
