the last guardian team ico history

For many, one of the most anticipated Playstation 3 titles (and one of the reasons some bought a PS3 in the first place) has been the upcoming Team ICO game, The Last Guardian. Originally codenamed “Trico”, fans panicked fans and media hype have led some to believe that it was cancelled, where as others have waited patiently. We took a look at Team ICO’s track history as a long time Playstation developer since the original Playstation. Oh, you didn’t know that? We explain 2 things that show Team ICO’s history for taking a long time to make great games.

1) The original ICO game was supposed to be for the original Playstation.
It was taking so long to design the game that by the time it came out, the PS1 would’ve been obsolete. Consequently, Sony had Team ICO recreate it for the Playstation 2 with better graphics.

2) Shadow of the Colossus was supposed to have 48 collosi.
That’s right, the title endured a long and thorough production process with designer Fumito Ueda holding his team to a near perfectionist standard. As a result, SOTC had to be trimmed down to the 16 collosi we see in the final game.

Shadow of the Colossus unused colossi

Formed in 1997 and with only 2 games under their belt, it’s pretty self evident that Team ICO takes their time making a game. This is due in part to Ueda’s high standards of art; best displayed when he famously hired only 2 artists out of a 500 applicant pool. So when the media hype train throws rumors out there that The Last Guardian has been cancelled, it’s probably not true. Personally, I do think it’s likely going to be a Playstation 4 title, but thats purely speculative.

The Last Guardian PS4

Shuhei Yoshida, head of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studio, recently discussed the PS4 launch in Europe. Among the questions he was asked, were a few regarding the largely anticipated and delayed Team Ico game, The Last Guardian. Shuhei Yoshida avoided answering the questions directly despite multiple attempts. Currently, The Last Guardian is supposed to be a PS3 game, but rumors and statements have surfaced that have suggested it may surface as a Playstation 4 game.

Here’s how the interview went…

Eurogamer: In terms of the stuff you really do have responsibility for, like the first-party titles, there was talk tonight of some games appearing on both PS4 and PS3 from some companies. Will we see that with PS3 titles that have already been announced, like Beyond and The Last Guardian?

Shuhei Yoshida: [Laughs] That’s an interesting question! So we announced four titles from Worldwide Studios but we have more games in development for PS4 –

Eurogamer: Well I think if you can’t play big PS3 games on PS4 [which is what David Perry said] –

Shuhei Yoshida: — Right.

Eurogamer: And Beyond is a big PS3 game loads of people want to play, and The Last Guardian is something I really want to play – I want to play them on the new console. Because once that new console comes out, I’m going to move the PS3 to a different part of the room, you know what I mean?

Shuhei Yoshida: [Pause]

In a different statement, made at an event right after the Playstation Event in New York, Yoshida said, “I’m not ready to talk about [The Last Guardian] — sorry. We’ve broken promises. We are waiting for the right to time reintroduce The Last Guardian. I’m not going to say anything beyond what [lead designer Fumito Ueda] said.

Clearly, Sony is being careful not to make promises regarding future titles. The fact that the PS4 will not be able to natively play Playstation 3 games would certainly influence Sony to change a number of their upcoming games to Playstation 4. The alternative consequence to this would be making a very competitive market between the PS3 and PS4, similar to the PSP and PS Vita situation. Historically, the cheaper system of the 2 will win.

I for one, was quite disappointed that Sony didn’t mention The Last Guardian at all. Ultimately, Yoshida didn’t say “no”, which in the gaming business world, often means yes.

The Last Guardian Still In Development According to it's Creator

One of our most highly anticipated games is The Last Guardian (formerly code named Trico), which is being developed by Team ICO under SCE Japan Studio. Good news has come in the form of a public address by it’s creator, Fumito Ueda. On his website he posted a status update for The Last Guardian, the follow up to Shadow of the Colossus & ICO. This is what Fumito Ueda said…

“As some of you may have heard, I left Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Studio some time ago to pursue my creative passions. Nevertheless, I continue working on THE LAST GUARDIAN as a freelance contributor.

While it’s been a long time coming, THE LAST GUARDIAN remains under my creative supervision and is still in development by an incredibly talented team.

I should also mention that details regarding THE LAST GUARDIAN’s release is solely decided by Sony Computer Entertainment, not myself. Please keep an eye out for their official announcement.

Moving forward, it is my intent to continue my involvement with THE LAST GUARDIAN project, as well as pursue new creative projects with a fresh perspective. As I rekindle my passions as a creator, I look forward to seeing where it will take me, and I deeply appreciate your support during this transition.”

This message tell us:

  • The Last Guardian has NOT been cancelled
  • Sony will announce the release date for The Last Guardian at some point
  • Fumito Ueda is working in a creative capacity on the game

What does this message POSSIBLY hint at?

In a way, Ueda saying that Sony will announce the release date of the The Last Guardian could be his way of saying “stop asking.” Part of the reason why The Last Guardian has been under a lot of pressure is because it was announced 4 years ago and it’s release has since been delayed a few times. While this isn’t something new for Sony, as can be seen with releases of the Gran Turismo series, it’s something that Sony and many other companies have learned from. Don’t talk about games too early. On the other hand, it could mean that the game has shifted gears from being a Playstation 3 title and will now be a PS4 title. This is entirely speculative, but could also explain the extreme delays, comments about  technical hurdles, and the very secretive nature of the games status.

Games like Shadow of the Colossus & The Last Guardian sell systems. Sony will need a game like that to sell the upcoming Playstation 4. Sure, it’s expensive to make those games for such a long time, but it also makes a lot of money. I equate games like this to the U.S. space program. Expensive, inspiring, sometimes profitable. At the end of the day, the inspiration to buy a Sony console is what it’s all about; something Sony has learned the hard way with the Playstation Vita.

Happy New Year! This is our list of Top 5 Game Developers To Watch in 2013! These game developers make some of our favorite games and we’re excited to see what they will be showing off this year. 2012 was a great year, so lets get 2013 kicked off!

1 Kojima Productions
Why? Metal Gear. Yep. It’s one of the biggest gaming franchises of all time. With a fancy new engine (FOX Engine) and 2 new Metal Gear Solid games, we’re excited to see what insanity Hideo Kojima and his lab come up with next. Metal Gear Solid was notable for being the first 3D stealth espionage game. MGS2 set the gaming world on fire with astounding production values (you could shoot the cups!) and gameplay. MGS3 & 4 carried the torch in the next generations. What will Metal Gear Solid 5 & Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes bring us? If the trailers are any indication, then it will be the best looking MGS ever coupled with some very intense story telling.

Kojima Productions

2 id Software
Why? 2012 gave us 2 expansion packs from id Software. One in the form of Doom 3 BFG Edition and the other in the form Rage’s The Scorchers DLCDoom 3‘s new episode gave us a taste of the classic Doom level design. Aggressive scenarios focused on violent gunplay rather than survival horror. The Scorchers DLC gave more of id’s famous FPS gameplay but with the production values of a modern AAA game developer. And that’s exactly what id Software is. We’re excited to see what id Software will have to show at this years E3 and/or QuakeCon (Doom IV anyone?).

3 Square Enix
Why? The Luminous Engine showed us what Square Enix can do with real time graphics. But we already knew that potential existed. The Final Fantasy franchise is in the shadow of its legacy, 2013 would be a good year for a Final Fantasy comeback. With Final Fantasy VII still unmatched in sales to any other in the series, can Square Enix reignite the Final Fantasy magic? Or perhaps an exciting new IP from the RPG masters would be in order, especially if you consider the success of their one off titles like Chrono Trigger. While we’re all for a Final Fantasy VII HD remake, it may not be the most appropriate move at this time. We’re looking forward to see what Square Enix has in the oven.

4 Nintendo
Why? Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong & Star Fox. Simply characters in the next Mario Kart & Mario Golf or once great franchises? With the Wii U officially out and a less than stellar game library (although not terrible) 2013 is Nintendo’s chance to make the Wii U stick before the next gen of consoles catch up. While we expect to see a slew of casual audience targeted games for the Wii U, what we really want is a new critical work from Nintendo. Maybe a new Metroid, something with the production values and sheer depth as Super Metroid. Definitely a new Zelda. Link, finally in HD on his home territory. Don’t let us down Nintendo.

5 SCE Japan Studio
Why? Sony may not have the same classical gaming history as Nintendo or Sega, but they do have some massive titles under their belt. Their game development branch, SCE Japan Studio in conjunction with other Sony related studios, has brought forward some of the most memorable and artistic Playstation games. Some of these include Shadow of the Colossus, PataponTokyo JungleDemon’s Souls & Ape Escape. With it’s upcoming games, Rain and The Puppeteer, 2013 could give gamers 2 more reasons to keep playing on their PS3‘s. And oh yeah… The Last Guardian.
