Coming up this year is a tactical RPG for the 3DS, Project X Zone, however in Japan it came out back in October of 2012. This game, which is being published by Namco Bandai Games, will feature characters from three major video game publishers… Capcom, Sega, and of course Namco Bandai. It also seems to have anime styled cut scenes. Project X Zone is a follow up to Namco x Capcom (2005), and it will be featuring over 200 characters. These characters include, but aren’t limited to..

  • Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li from Street Fighter (Capcom)
  • X and Zero from Mega Man X (Capcom)
  • Jin and Xiaoyu from Tekken (Namco Bandai)
  • Kite and BlackRose from .hack (Namco Bandai)
  • Akira and Pai-Chan from Virtua Fighter (Sega)
  • Ulala from Space Channel 5 (Sega)

Project X Zone sounds pretty epic, but I have two questions.

  1. WHY IS THIS COMING OUT ONLY ON 3DS?
  2. WHY ISN’T THIS A FIGHTING GAME?

I mean seriously what the hell. When I heard about this I expected a fighter, now I can’t say I dislike RPG or the tactical sub genre either… But seriously. You had a chance to make a bad ass fighting game and didn’t. Then, you go and throw it on the 3DS, but I honestly look forward to this. Also, I noticed that this game hasn’t really gotten any press in the U.S., which is pretty bad for the sales point of games. Either way, I’m looking forward to Project X Zone. I’m excited to see characters like Arthur (Ghosts’n Goblins), Frank West (Dead Rising), and Hsien-Ko (Darkstalkers) in a new game, yay for crossovers.Project X Zone has a set release date in North America for June 25, 2013.

Fighting games such as Tekken have been popular since the mid-90s, and obviously preforming the insane moves from games is great fun for fans. I mean what teenager doesn’t want to do the wicked Phoenix Smasher? What 12 year-old doesn’t karate chop their mother’s plant? Its a great fighting lesson and that plant deserved it. However, a few also do it professionally.

Uriah Hall is a Jamaican MMA fighter who is a UFC finalist. He explains that in his early fighting days he was inspired by Tekken and practiced a lot of the moves on his own. His trainer explains that those were basically the only moves that he knew.

“I would play that video game [Tekken] so much, and you know, I would go into practice mode and I would have the character, the computer, just spare with me back and forth almost like regular training. And you know, I would just keep playing until I see something that I do or I like and just pick up on it. And for me, I don’t know, visually it was almost like my body adjusted to it. So when I started to spar, moves that I would see, it would just come back like that. It’s something I couldn’t explain. Everytime I would see a cool move in Tekken man, I would just practice it till I got good at it. And when I do it in training, they’d be like what the hell was that.”

Anderson Silva needs no introduction since he’s the current and longest reigning middleweight champion. He’s used Boxing, Muay Thai, and even Capoeira to win his fights. One of his inspirations was of course Tekken.

“My children are who play the game most of the UFC. I play Tekken and I’ve taken too many techniques there, who worked and work today”

These are two badass dudes who have inspiration from fighting games.  Do you guys know any real life fighters who learned from the virtual ones?

Tekken Card Tournament screenshot 1

You read that correctly. Released on smart phones and computers is Tekken Card Tournament. It’s a free to play virtual card game which pits you against classic Tekken fighters in turn based, card combat. I played a bit of it and it’s not as bad as it sounds.

Check out the trailer for Tekken Card Tournament

You have 3 options when fighting, focus, strike and block. Focus allows you to get more cards from the current deck. Strike attacks your opponent and block guards. The more you focus, the more cards you can chain together for a combo. It works pretty well. As the video above shows you, there will be physical cards sold which allow you to add new characters and upgrade existing ones. Furthermore, the card can be used in tandem with your smartphone camera for “AR” battles using your surroundings. No word yet on how or when the cards will be released.

It’s available as a free app for iOS (iPhone,iPad, iPod Touch) and Android. You can also play it right in your computer web browser (PC, Mac, Linux) at the official Tekken Card Tournament website.

This is a section of BabysoftMurderhands.com where we post and discuss a trailer for a classic cult movie. The movies we select will hopefully be movies that gamers will love too. And of course, if you haven’t seen it, we’ll give you a link to get it.

Movies For Gamers Tekken The Motion Picture 1997 poster

Fans of the fighting game series Tekken were disappointed by the live action Tekken movie in 2010. Fortunately, Tekken: The Motion Picture exists and although it’s a typical 90′s anime, it is pretty good. It tells the story of a boy’s mission for revenge on his father, who threw him off a cliff when he was a boy. The boy, Kazuya Mishima a street fighter. The father, Heihachi Mishima, a tycoon who holds martial arts competitions. What better way to get back at your dad? Tekken: The Motion Picture stays pretty close to the Tekken story, with only minor adjustments. Over all, all the key characters are well represented and the movie serves as good gamer entertainment.
